What was the "New Imperialism?

The New Imperialism was the act of the Europeans taking over and dividing Africa amongst themselves in the 1800's. They had tried to conquer Africa before, but their progress had been halted by disease and tough terrain. But on there second attempt, with the help of the Maxim Machine Gun. The natives just could compete with the power of these guns.Even thought the Europeans said that they were out to help the Africans, they were actually just looking for personal profit.Which is quite sad, they really could have helped the Africans.
